CLASES Y TALLERES

Girl Up!

Led by Teaching Artist Michelle Nugent

Based on inspirational artists and activists such as Malala Yousafzai, Solange, Frida Kahlo, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and Emma Watson, young artists discover themselves as part of a continuum of women who have used the arts as a platform for addressing social justice issues. Brainstorming, writing, reflection, and visual thinking strategies are central to this course for middle school girls.

Comics and Social Justice

Led by Teaching Artist Javier Nuñez

Students used their passion for comics to create unique messages for social justice and equality. Exploring comic books from diverse cultures they learned about the importance of having people of color and girls in comics, and how to use stories about superheroes, mutants, villains, and others to fight against injustices. This class was taught to more than 75 middle school students at CityArts’ studios and in public middle schools at the Providence After School Alliance.

Community Lens with Providence College

The class is collaboratively taught by Providence College faculty and CityArts teaching artist staff. CityArts youth and Providence College students worked one-on-one to examine the ideas of peace and justice through the lens of photography and writing. This is a Providence College class that takes place at CityArts studios during the spring of each year for the past five years. The program ended in a final exhibition at CityArts.

The Broad Street Journal

Teens and youth work together with teaching artist Reza Clifton and retired Providence Journal photography editor, Mary Murphy, to develop a newspaper about CityArts and Highlander Charter School. They learn how to interview, write, take photos, record video, and tell true stories through a variety of media.
